Claude VonStroke has been flying high since founding the San Francisco-based and Detroit-loving record label Dirtybird in 2005. He has hosted the Dirtybird Campout Festival and Dirtybird BBQ Parties across the country, was voted America's DJ in 2016, played both weekends at Electric Forest in 2017, and on Saturday, May 26, he closes out the Movement stage for Movement 2018.

Jeff Rosenstock has been very busy lately. It’s been that way for the Long Island musician since he started gaining traction in 1998, when his first band put out its first record. Last year, Rosenstock performed at the high-profile Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. This summer Rosenstock and his current band are playing two shows in metro Detroit as part of a tour for its most recent album, POST-.

Joyce Manor and AJJ (formerly Andrew Jackson Jihad) have both made their presence known through relentless touring and fitting the framework of their respective genres just so damn perfectly. They both create catchy and resonate tunes, through either a more pop or more folky approach to the modern punk sound.

Bear vs Shark announced a short reunion tour about ten years after their last set of live shows. Along with the tour, Equal Vision Records has released a double LP compilation album consisting of their first two records, graced with Ralph Steadman-esque artwork made by frontman Marc Raffi. Along the tour, which sold out about half of its shows, BVS played alongside Child Bite, Portugal The Man, LVL UP, and other great bands.

At a recent James Tatum Foundation for the Arts benefit concert, special tributes were made to Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and jazz pianist and vibraphonist Terry Jean Pollard. The foundation presented the Distinguished Jazz Award in Pollard’s name at the Max M. Fisher Music Center. For those who knew her, seeing Pollard’s name next to those of famous civil rights icons is not a surprise.

You might not realize it, but one of the fastest growing sports in the country involves a Frisbee. It's called "Ultimate Frisbee," and it's already popular on college campuses nationwide. The sport is breaking out nationally, with two professional leagues, and locally, with Detroit's own pro team, Detroit Mechanix.

It’s no secret that Metro Times has a bit of a crush on Detroit’s Mountains and Rainbows; heck, they even topped our list of best new bands last year. We considered them “new” at the time, despite having been around for at least a handful of years, because they hadn’t released a proper full length album.

Blues, garage rock, country, pop, and of course, 1960s-style Detroit soul — this album has it all. Arguably, some of the most insightful commentary on contemporary popular culture takes the form of music, more specifically, conscious hip hop. Hip hop culture is itself a fairly young medium of artistic expression on the continuum of African American culture, and has become increasingly influential in mainstream American culture. In this paper, I will briefly convey the relationship between hip hop culture and the mainstream music industry, and expand on the impact Kendrick Lamar is having in hip hop culture, on mainstream music, and society at large.
